Michael has been training with coaching from Robert Phillips. On his second outing on moving water, and his second Fairnilee Slalom, he won the Div 4 convincingly today Sunday17 Aug 08, and would have beaten several of the Div 3 men. He was therefore promoted to Div 3. Well Done indeed for representing FCC to a top standard.

Latest Olympic Selection news ...
The BCU has announced the Great Britain Senior Team for 2008, and Nominated Boats for the 2008 Bejing Olympics:David Florence (C1) (Forth CC), Campbell Walsh (K1M) and Fiona Pennie (K1W).
With only one boat per class per country maximum it means that GBR has 3 Scots out of 3 athletes racing in the individual Senior Slalom events.Click for PDF Download
This is an excellent result that reflects well on Scottish Canoeing.
Slightly more complicated for the C2. Tim and Etienne have also won the selection series but they have not qualified a boat in C2 for Britain yet. Their opportunity to do this is at the European Champs around the 10th May – so they still have another hurdle…

In Heat 1, Fiona was caught out at gate 16. Awarded a 50 - (It wasn't a 50) . In Heat 2 she picked up 4 penalty points to put her low on the finish board.
Unfortunately, the first run was not good enough and she has been eliminated from the competition. This is a big disappointment, as Fiona was top-5 in that field.
David Florence wins Silver in Beijing!!
Brits Abroad! David Florence wins silver in the Canadian Single Canoe Slalom. David went into the final in P4
Silver Machine ! David Florence wins Scotland's first medal of the Beijing games.
Campbell Walsh had a terrible run missing a gate and having to paddle back for it. He also took another penalty and got stoppered at gate 4. So, he has not qualified for the final.
K1 Result
David Florence is through to the finals of the C1. He took a swirl in the gate 4 upstream eddy and lost some time. Then he took a 2 second penalty, but recovering, he powered down to qualify for the final. Among those ahead of him is Mikael Martikan who is 88.92 including a 2.
Semifinal results C1
That big moment. Sitting on the start. David and Campbell get serious. All the training, the years of commitment and coaching, the sessions the weights - all in the past. You go now with what you've got on.
And the result of today's heats? Big Success for GBR!
David Florence and Campbell Walsh of Team GB both paddled at top form to win through to the Semifinals of the Slalom Canoeing at the Shunyi Olympic Wildwater Canoeing Park. The first of two heat runs had them lying 7th and 14th, but their second runs were excellent. David qualified in 3rd and Campbell in 9th.
C1 Heats results First Run C1 Heats results 2nd Run K1M Heats results 1st Run. K1M Heats results 2nd Run.
This fierce course was daunting for many of the paddlers. David and Campbell did the job and qualified for the semis without too much ostentation. The big upset today - (apart from Andy Murry's 1st round defeat) was the USA's S. Parsons was P3 after the first runs. In the second run, he overcooked it at the last up left, went too high straight at the pole and was judged to have not got enough of himself over the gateline. The 50 second penalty was the coup de grace, and he will not appear tomorrow. The top paddlers were mainly the older, more experienced heads with Molmenti and Florence the exceptions. In the K1M it was Kauzer from Slovenia, Lefevre of France and Molmenti of Italy. In the Canadians it was Martikan of Slovakia, Benzian of Germany and Florence of GBR. The older paddlers like Martikan and Lefevre seemed to flow visibly faster, getting into route-1, the sweet flowline, and not appearing to have to work so hard, slipping through the huge stoppers without seeming to get wet - So much so it was catching out the commentators. (In Lefevre's case the commentry was "And here comes the triple world champion and Olympic medallist from 2000 and 2004, not so strong and quick now, it's so dissapointing to see that he can't ... oh- he's just gone into P2!").
Opening Ceremony 8/8/08 - David Florence's birthday. A good omen. This is the luckiest day on the Chinese Calendar.
David Florence took part in the overwhelmingly spectacular Opening Ceremony at the Bird's Nest stadium in Beijing today 8/8/8.
Pictured here with fellow Olympian Andy Murray, he will see for himself how awesome is the scale of the Olympic Enterprise.
FCC Is David's Club, and on behalf of everyone, Go For It! - You alone will be the best qualified expert to know what to do.
This Slalom course is beyond the usual. Some of the toughest C1 coaches will not even paddle the course, it is so severe and continuous. David is now in a class of his own in GBR C1. He is truly an awesome athlete, now. Really World Class. George and Jill will join their famous son this weekend to cheer him on this Monday for the Heats and Tuesday for the Finals.
