The different types of Canoeing that members get involved in:
First, we have Surf Kayak, a thrilling and tough discipline that is available to us in Scotland near Dunbar and at Thurso.
Then, there is Marathon Racing. The Union Canal is a priceless asset that many paddlers travel miles to get to.
Slalom is one of the most exciting sports to be in or to watch. Look out for the Olympics athletes.
Sprint is the pure sport. No excuses. You earn your place.
Canoeing Definitions
At FCC we use the ICF definitions:
“Canoeing” is the sport (Not “Paddlesports”, not “Canoeing and Kayaking”).
In this sport we use types of Canoe to go canoeing.
A “canoe” is a generic shape for a small craft whose lines in plan view meet at a point at each end.
The ICF rules show that there are two main types of canoe and these are the Kayak type and the Canadian type.
Here are the authoritative sources:
Flatwater Racing Competition Rules
Final Version
2.5 Canoeing Competitions in Continental and Regional Multi-sport Games and Championships shall be organised under the ICF Rules and Regulations or World Championships for that discipline.
(Note here that they say “Canoeing Competitions”, not “Canoeing and Kayaking Competitions”.)
Definitions:These show that the “C” in C1, C2 etc.stands for “Canadian” and not “Canoe”
CATEGORIES
Kayak Men, Kayak Women
CLASSES K1 M - K2 M - K4 M - K1 W - K2 W - K4 W
Canadian Men, Canadian Women
C1 M - C2 M - C4 M – C1 W – C2 W – C4 W
21 MEANS OF PROPULSION
21.1 Kayaks shall be propelled solely by means of double-bladed paddles.
21.2 Canadian canoes shall be propelled solely by means of single-bladed paddles.
Canadian Canoe : Example of usage:
19.2 The plates shall be placed on the centreline on the afterdeck (Canadian canoes foredeck).
Not unexpectedly, even in the ICF master document, there is an example of the use of the generic form when the particular type is intended.
This is an error of omission of the word “Canadian”.(The meaning is ambiguous.Canoe could apply to the two types of canoe: Canadians and Kayaks).
Kayaks
8.5 Boats may have one rudder. The rudder has to be placed under the hull of the boat.
8.5.1 The boat to be designed as to be a sit-in (Kayak type) not a sit-on (Surf Ski type)
Canoes
8.6 The canoe must be built symmetrically upon the axis of its length.
(This should be “Canadian Canoe”, not "Canoe".)
7.1.6 Kayaks are decked boats, which must be propelled by double bladed paddles and inside which the competitors sit. Canadian canoes are decked boats that must be propelled by single-bladed paddles and inside which the competitors kneel.
In Slalom they refer to the “Event” not the “Class”, but the Class is implied in the event.
EVENTS
Individual K1M, K1W, C1M, C1W, C2M and C2W
Team K1Mx3, K1Wx3, C1Mx3, C1Wx3, C2Mx3 and C2Wx3
Usage of the term “sport of canoeing”
3.3.3 A competitor may not compete for more than one Federation in any one calendar year in the sport of canoeing.
Other notes:

Difficulties with use of the word Canoe to define a type rather than a generic shape.
“…’Canoes’… are defined by …” Kneeling position:(No) Sometimes it is sitting on a thwart with feet in front.
“…’Canoes’… are defined by …” Open boat: (No) Sometimes it is closed-decked.
“…’Canoes’… are defined by …” Flat-Bottomed: (No) Sometimes it’s displacement hulled.
