FCC Barge Trip Sunday October 19th 2008.Chris Gay laid on a Canal Barge Trip for parents and children in co-operation with Re-Union.org.uk for FCC Children.
Fancy Dress Barge trip Oct’08 was well attended, 20 kids between 7 & 12 years dressed from pirates to witches and ghouls and 6 adults went on the trip. The bad weather meant we had to spend most of the trip indoors, where we were all kept entertained by Jerry McFarlane (1 of the parents). The trip was cut short and after 2hrs we arrived back at the club for some impromptu games of musical chairs.Being keen kayakers nobody got too wet dookin' for the apples.Sean Doig and Claire McFarlane won the best fancy dress. Chris Gay thought he looked great as the white witch and that he should have won!All departed by 5.30 with their lucky bags and a smile on their faces saying they enjoyed the day. Many thanks to Kirsten Eveleigh (the evil witch), Jerry McFarlane, Ann Gay, Kay Eveleigh, Carolyn Grant, Jonathon Riddell for their help and support throughout the day. Thanks to Phil Gavigan of Re-Union.org.uk for a wonderful trip for FCC.
FCC Ratho Marathon Success
21/09/2009 Chris Gay and a team of helpers laid on an excellent FCC Ratho East Marathon. There were over 50 competitors and this has been successful in introducing a large number of new Junior paddlers to Sprint Racing and Marathon Racing. The event was successful financially, and Chris's team laid on soup, snacks and hot drinks from the new FCC Gazebo. There were three events: Long, Short and Mini.

David Florence: Interview on the Castle
Would-Be spaceman Florence extends FCC's Motto!
Now it's "Per Ventus Et Per Artus Ad Astra"!
"Let the World's young people assemble in London in 2012 for the 30th Olympiad! Please stand for the National Anthem of Great Britain" So went out the call as the Beijing torch flickered its last. The flame is kept kindled and will be carried to London for Our Games.
How will London do it? Lord Coe has clear leadership objectives. "'Legacy is enshrined in our master-plan alongside operational effectiveness" Lord Coe Clip
The London OG's will be smaller, more open to the public, more intimate, and will leave a useful legacy of ecellence in sport. In the closing ceremony Jimmy Page laid on a promise of a "Whole Lotta Love" atop a London Bus! David Beckham kicked-off a political football into the audience as a symbol. "Footy? Over to you - the crowd" it seemed to say. London Mayor Johnson has now set a lighter and less stuffy tone with his quirky and rather irreverent appearance.
How will London do it? Olympic Hero Mathew Pinsent has a 10-point check-list :
Video - Pinsent's 10 rules for a top Olympics
If everyone can stay focused and positive, exhibiting winner-behaviour, then a new-model 21st Century British spirit will emerge from the 30th Olympiad that will clothe our generations for 50 years afterwards. There will be the denigrators, but they want to continue to believe in their world. Leave them behind. Britain has to get it right. Britain must get it right. And it will be good!
Our Forth CC forbears contributed to the Last London Olympics in 1948. We should keep up the tradition somehow.
Forth CC now has two Olympians in David Florence (2008) and Stewart Pitt (1996). Who for 2012? Watch this space...
Look at the Map of the 2008 British Golds Map
FCC: How can Edinburgh succeed in Wildwater? We may not get a Cardiff Wildwater Course (£14m in a £50m complex), but we could do a smarter not harder job in training if we could get a small section of moving water in the City. Let's have a circulating minislalom course of say 6 to 10 gates with reconfigurable courses between runs. The pumps could pump the water and athletes back up a ramp with gates on it. The strategy would be to get more paddlers in daily training. OK, once they get to Senior Team level, they would go to the main British Team centres of excellence, but we can't afford to have hundreds of junior athletes hacking down the motorway to Nottingham, or flying to London every weekend.
D.C. FCC 08/2008
Tim Brabants has re-calibrated the Olympic Gold Standard for GBR. He's shown that it can take 15 years to get a Gold. He's set himself apart. It is for most athletes a pinnacle of achievement to represent your country at the Olympics. Tim has kept going in adversity through three Olympic Games. In Olympic Canoeing Sprint Racing it can take sporting lifetime to climb the winner's top step. This is an historic win, and it is a tribute to him and all the support from all of the British Isles. It shines a golden light on all the unsung heroes toiling from the base of the triangle of the sport to the top. Watching him win, with no one coming close to passing him gives us all that winning feeling! What Now? Will there now be a Gold Rush, or will they be looking back in 50 years time to Tim's Gold as GBR's high-point?
"I've talked about it [being an Olympic champion] all the time and it doesnot feel real. The hard work throughout the winter, the times you arefalling to bits, the times when you are in pieces - this is what it's allabout," said Brabants.
Tim got British Sprint Canoeing's first medal in Sydney, aged 23. It was Bronze in the K1 1000m. In Athens he broke the World Record at 1000m - in the heats. He ended up 5th in the final. Then came a 2 year lay-off, with a return in 2006 to deal with "unfinished business"! He could now say "These Proceedings Are Now Closed" ...But wait - let's see him in a K2 or a K4 in London!
Great Britain and Northern Ireland has been competing in the sport of Canoeing as a full Olympic sport since the Berlin Olympics in 1936.
This is Britain's first ever Canoeing Gold Medal, and never was a medal more deserved. The Bronze Medallist from Sydney 8 years ago, has dedicated 15 years of his life to Olympic Gold. He won his heat to go straight to the final. In the final he shot out ahead immediately and pulled away dropping his main rival Adam Koverden in the last 200m. He finished a boatlength ahead of Norway's Eirik Veraas Larsen with Australia's Ken Wallace coming through for Bronze.
This is collossally good news for Canoeing in all the UK.

14/08/08 - 16:00 Reports are being read about David Florence's parents, George and Jill with son Fraser and daughter Lyndsay being struck by lightning on the Great Wall of China. First indications state that they had a checkup and seem to be OK. David wasn't with them.

Latest Olympic Selection news ...
The BCU has announced the Great Britain Senior Team for 2008, and Nominated Boats for the 2008 Bejing Olympics:David Florence (C1) (Forth CC), Campbell Walsh (K1M) and Fiona Pennie (K1W).
With only one boat per class per country maximum it means that GBR has 3 Scots out of 3 athletes racing in the individual Senior Slalom events.Click for PDF Download
This is an excellent result that reflects well on Scottish Canoeing.
Slightly more complicated for the C2. Tim and Etienne have also won the selection series but they have not qualified a boat in C2 for Britain yet. Their opportunity to do this is at the European Champs around the 10th May – so they still have another hurdle…
